Choir is ready to rock Newbury

A group of 100 singers who belong to Rock Choir will be performing in a shopping centre tonight (Thursday)

A ROCK Choir will be belting out tunes in a Newbury shopping centre this evening (Thursday).

The 100-strong group of singers will performing songs such as Build Me Up Buttercup and Walking on Broken Glass in the Kennet Shopping centre at 7.30pm and at 8.30pm.

A Newbury couple, Robbie and Brian Harling, who are in the Basingstoke branch of Rock Choir which is visiting the town tonight, said that they hope it gives local people a taste of what they could also join up to when Rock Choir groups open in Newbury, Thatcham and Goring in the new year.

Mrs Harling, aged 60, of Gwynn Close, said: “If they like it they join online and can download the music and lyrics. We joined the Basingstoke Rock Choir three years ago because there wasn't one in Newbury. We know a lot of people in Newbury that would want to go [to a Rock Choir group] but don't want to travel too far.”

She said of newcomers: “You don't have to audition or be able to read music. It is all about having fun. When you are all in a big group it sounds great.”
