Café wants to serve alcohol until midnight
Spoons Coffee Shop in Tilehurst wants to change its licence to sell alcohol, play music and open later.
But the local parish council has objected to the move, saying it would have an adverse impact on local residents.
West Berkshire Council’s licensing sub committee heard that it already sells alcohol during the day,
The coffee shop in The Colonnade, Overdown Road, wants to open from Monday to Saturday from 7am to midnight and Sundays until 11pm as well as being able to open for late night refreshments indoors and outdoors.
Councillor Clive Taylor of Tilehurst Parish Council said: “Our primary concern is the extension of the licence with regards to the outside area given the nuisance this could cause in Tring Road and Fairford Road.
“Some local people have told us they have concerns with the noise it could cause. It is a very good café, and serves a good purpose and is well liked by the community. I regard myself as a satisfied customer of the café.”
Jackie Major, also on the parish council, said: “The garden area is owned by the landlord of The Collonade and the landlord during Covid allowed the outside area to be used. We understand this was just for Covid and there are no formal agreements in place to use it.”
Councillor Rick Jones said: “The café is clearly valued in its current form. I believe there is customer demand for an evening service there. It looks to me as if it would be well controlled.”
The café must wait for five days before the council lets it know in writing.
