Beloved charity shop Helping Hands in Tadley closes ‘due to unforeseen circumstances’

A beloved charity shop in Tadley has closed its doors for the foreseeable future “due to unforeseen circumstances”.

Helping Hands in Tadley is a community shop that has been open since 2007 and has supported local clubs, groups and charitable organisations through selling donated items such as clothes, books, household items and more.

The shop, which is located at 66 Franklin Avenue, announced on Facebook on October 11 that “due to unforeseen circumstances, we will be closed for the foreseeable future”.

The social media post sparked an outpouring of support and sympathy from regular customers.

Helen Halliday commented: “I, like so many others, are hoping that you are all okay and that the underlying issue affecting the ability to open can be resolved.

“You are an amazing group of people and your shop is much loved by your customers. Thinking of everybody and hoping to see you open again soon.”

Christine McGarvie stated: “Oh no. I hope this isn’t the end of a wonderful local charity. They have done so much for this community.”

Several Tadley residents also offered their own time to help run the charity shop if staff shortages were the reason for the abrupt closure.

Former Tadley and Pamber Conservative borough councillor Kerri Carruthers said: “Oh no. That’s really sad to read. I hope that everybody is ok. The shop is such a wonderful asset to our community.

“Could those involved set up a ‘friends of helping hands’ community group so people could try to help if it could be useful? I’d be happy to be involved.”

In response to the outpouring of support and offering of help, Helping Hands replied: “Thank you for your comments.

“All those who have emailed and offered help, from our advertising, we have been answering and we are collating a list.

“If you or anyone else would like to put their names forward please email info@helpinghandsintadley.org.uk

“We will be delighted to add them. We cannot provide a detailed list of requirements at this moment in time. Thank you again.”

Since opening 16 years ago, the shop has donated £112,448.99 to charitable causes in Tadley and the surrounding area.
