Beenham's Six Bells named top pub

Pub receives West Berkshire CAMRA top accolade

THE Six Bells at Beenham has been named West Berkshire’s Pub of the Year.

West Berkshire Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) awarded the accolade to the pub for its quintessential English village pub feel, meeting the needs of locals and travellers alike.

Indeed, the branch said that the two cosy bars, delightfully decorated with items from around the world, provided comfortable seating with ample tables for diners.

Glynis and Chris Harman have run the communitybased village free house for the last 11 years.

Mrs Harman is local to Beenham and has been in the pub trade for most of her working life.

Her husband Chris, originally from New Zealand, produces a range of dishes incorporating local ingredients.

“Owning and running a pub is a very committing occupation – we are The Six Bells so to speak – so receiving an award like this is very personal, and something we are proud to have achieved twice in seven years,” the couple said.

The name commemorates the recasting of the parish church bells after a fire in 1794.

West Berkshire branch of CAMRA pubs officer, Glen Parsons, said: “As we reviewed the candidates for this years award, it became clear that The Six Bells had delivered excellence across all of the key criteria – outstanding beer, great atmosphere, welcoming staff, and somewhere that anyone can feel at home.

“The pub has appeared in the CAMRA Good Beer Guide for the last eight years, a feat shared with only one or two other pubs in our region.

“I urge people to drop by and judge for yourself.”
