Bayer staff walk in memory of friend and colleague

Team of 38 complete 12-mile trek along Jurassic Coast to raise £4,000 for Cancer Research

A TEAM of 38 people from Bayer has raised almost £4,000 for Cancer Research after completing a 12-mile sponsored walk to remember their colleague and friend.

Matt Draper joined Bayer 10 years ago, working at first in sales and business development, then, in his final years, joining the ophthalmology team in its medical department.

In February, he died, aged just 37, after a long and brave fight against cancer, leaving his wife Ellie and one-year-old daughter.

His colleagues wanted to do something to remember Mr Draper and, joined by his widow, they completed the walk along the Jurassic coastal path between Seaton and Sidmouth, East Devon, in a little under eight hours.

Bayer ophthalmology business manager, Sebastian Schwerdt, said: “It proved an extremely challenging journey, particularly the very last climb.

“But the knowledge that we were walking for such an amazing colleague and a great charity helped keep us going.

“It was an emotional day, with both tears and laughter. It was one we will always remember.”

Mrs Draper said: “It was an amazing team achievement in memory of Matt, raising so much money for Cancer Research.

“Thank you to everyone who contributed. It was truly an honour to be part of the day.”
