Bath Road motorists account for nearly half of all those caught speeding in West berkshire
More than 1,950 caught speeding in the last twelve months
SPEEDING Bath Road motorists accounted for almost half of those caught by speed cameras in West Berkshire in the last 12 months.
More than 1,950 motorists were caught breaking the speed limit by three cameras along the A4 between Woolhampton and Speen.
The long stretch of road is one of the main routes through Newbury with varying speed limits.
Eight-hundred-and-three drivers were caught speeding along the road in Woolhampton, with cameras facing eastbound and westbound as motorists enter and leave the village.
Six-hundred-and-twenty-two were caught travelling too fast along the A4 in Thatcham by cameras lying to the east of Bourne Road and to the east of Northfield Road.
The cameras along the A4 in Speen, just passed the Shell garage westbound, and as motorists leave the bypass travelling eastbound, caught 526 motorists.
All are in 30mph zones.
In total 1,951 drivers were caught speeding along this stretch of the A4, a drop from the previous year with 2,102 motorists captured by the cameras.
During the last 12 months 4,425 drivers were caught travelling too swiftly through West Berkshire, which now results in motorists being given a £100 fine (increased from £60 as of August 16, 2013).
The figures, obtained through a Freedom of Information request, show that the number of drivers caught by fixed cameras is falling, however, with almost 500 fewer motorists captured speeding in the last 12 months compared to 2013/14.
The camera located along The Moors in Thatcham caught the fewest motorists speeding, with just 26 in the last 12 months.
Supt Lucy Hutson, of the Joint Operations Unit for Roads Policing, said: “Thames Valley Police is committed to reducing the number of people killed or injured on the roads and making the roads safer for all users.
“Speed has been shown to be a significant contributing factor in many serious and fatal collisions and recent work with the Transport Research Laboratory has demonstrated that a reduction in those speeding on our roads will make the roads safer.
“This research work has also shown fixed site cameras to be a valuable and effective method of speed reduction.
“The fixed sites have been chosen following analysis of collision data, and are clearly visible and marked.
“In an ideal world we would prefer to catch no one speeding as this would mean people were complying with the speed limit.
“Most of those that are caught offending attend a driver awareness course rather than receive penalty points.”
