Basildon man wins national BBC sewing competition

AN UPPER Basildon man has stitched his way to success after being crowned winner of this year’s Great British Sewing Bee.

Dad-of-two Matt Chapple, aged 37, managed to keep his triumph a secret for nine months until the programme was broadcast on BBC Two last Thursday.

He was one of 10 sewers from across the country in the running for the title.

Speaking to the Newbury Weekly News this week, he said he had absolutely no expectation to win the competition when he entered.

“It was fantastic,” he said. “To hear my name announced as the winner was just amazing.

“I’d only booked the time off [work] for the first two episodes. I think whilst my family and friends were surprised, I was the most shocked of all.”

Now an IT technician, Mr Chapple often makes clothes and costumes for his children, Max and Evie, and dresses for his wife, Gemma. He first discovered his love for sewing during his time in the army, when he was required to repair and maintain his own uniform.

“The competition was without a doubt one of the best things I’ve ever done,” he said. “We had such fun in there and we all really bonded as a group.

“Whenever I stop and think that we had three million people watching us sew it makes me smile.

“Just the idea of inspiring others is a great feeling.”

Mr and Mrs Chapple, who is an avid baker, are hoping to create their own business combining both of their passions. Watch this space...
