The 42-year-old, of Windsor Court, Newbury, is accused of assaulting May Seymour by beating her in Newbury on Saturday, April 5.

Mr Symonowicz, who was legally represented by Heulwen Everton, spoke only to confirm his details and to plead not guilty to the single charge.

Magistrates told him the case could proceed no further that day and that it would be adjourned for a trial to be arranged.

He was meanwhile refused bail and was remanded in custody.
