Artist seeks home for sundial

West Berkshire artist, Barrie Singleton, is looking for a home for a massive sundial

A WEST Berkshire artist is looking for a home for a massive, revolutionary sundial that will form part of the Cultural Olympiad - a celebration for the London 2012 Olympics.

Funding for the sundial, which could be as big as high 50ft is already available and could take a year to construct, but the artist behind the project, Barrie Singleton, of Shaw, said that it is still looking for a home.

The design for the sundial came from Mr Singleton's brother, John Singleton, who died in 2009. He was a semi-recluse and suffered from Asperger syndrome and he left enough money behind for the sundial to be erected.

In his later years, he became obsessed by sundials and he realised that all of them had flaws in their design, so he set about creating a new sundial that has a spiral design, making it more accurate and taking care of the problem of self-shading.

A smaller example of the design is already in place at Bayford Home near Newbury.
