Arsonists tried to torch The Wellington Arms in Baughurst




POLICE have appealed for witnesses and information following an attempt to torch a pub.

The incident happened overnight at The Wellington Arms pub in Baughurst.

Hampshire Constabulary said in a statement: “Officers were called at 7:26am on Saturday, August 31, to a report that an attempt had been made to set the pub alight.

“This occurred between 2am and 4am but was only discovered later when the first employee turned up for work.”

Hampshire and IIsle of Wight Fire Service attended the scene and extinguished a small smouldering fire that was located.

It was found that an accelerant had been poured over the front door and surrounding walls.

No injuries have been reported and only minor damage was caused.

The incident is currently being treated as suspected arson with intent to endanger life and officers are working to establish the exact circumstances.

Officers are appealing for witnesses and any information which may help with the investigation.

“Did you witness the incident or were you driving past the pub on Baughurst Road from the Shaw Lane direction?

“Do you have any CCTV or dash camera footage which may help our investigation?
