All Sorts for former Cross Keys pub

The Cross Keys has been renamed All Sorts after well known West Berkshire landlord Mickey Liquorish (geddit?) took over the running of the previously traditional London Road pub.
“All Sorts sums up what we are,” said Mr Liquorish, aged 49, who runs the pub with his wife, Lisa. “You can have everything from squid rings to a fish finger sandwich to a coffee.”
He is also confident that the new ambience and 1950s retro decor will counteract any customers mourning the loss of tradition in the building dating back to the 1890s.
“Pubs can’t stay in the past,” he said. “The days of dingy, dirty, old man pubs are over. No-one wants to drink in a boozer that looks like a porn shop.
“We are clean, light, bright and family friendly.”
The decor is not the only break from tradition with All Sorts offering pastries, home made cakes and coffees on top of the usual pub grub, serving food from 10am till 10pm.
The food will also be prepared in front of its most scrupulous critics - the customers - in the large open-plan kitchen which is visible to all guests, something Mr Liquorish, who is also head chef, feels brings personality to the new layout.
“Everyone can see everything. They can see the fresh ingredients, the chef working.”
A spokeswoman for Arkell’s, Nicky Godding, said the firm has owned the premises since 1996 and fully supported Mr Liquorish’s decisions, describing him as one of Newbury’s most well known landlords stemming from his time at the Bunk Inn in Curridge and later Harry's Bar & Kitchen, Donnington.
“Mickey is a very sociable person. Having an open kitchen is the perfect way for him to engage with his customers and that’s what people like,” said Mrs Godding.
Brewery director, George Arkell, believes this new style of pub is the future.
“Pubs won’t survive if they don’t adapt to what their customers’ want,” he said. “In some places people want traditional, in other places they want colour and personality, everywhere they want quality.
“Mickey hasn’t compromised on colour or fit. It’s a wonderful breath of fresh air for Newbury.”
