BRADFIELD Historical Society, Southend Cricket Club Pavilion, Heath Road, Bradfield Southend, Maj Gen (retd) Peter Williams: My Life as a Cold War Spy, 7.30pm. After studying History at Cambridge University, Major General (retd) Peter Williams spent over 30 years in the Coldstream Guards and enjoyed an unusually varied career. During the Cold War he specialised in intelligence. He studied Russian and German before spending more than four years in the 1980s in Berlin and East Germany as a liaison & operations officer in the British Commanders’-in-Chief Mission to the Group of Soviet Forces in Germany (known as BRIXMIS), in effect working as a military spy. No entry fee, but a donation of £4 towards expenses would be appreciated; a card payment facility is available. No advance booking required.
