Following their ‘lovely afternoon concert’ of Easter Blessings in March 2024, in which ‘harmonies and dynamics shone’ (@newburytoday), The Cromwell Singers are returning to the beautiful surroundings of St Mary’s Church, Thatcham for another joyful programme of uplifting music, including songs from practically every decade of the last 100 years, from I Want To Be Happy (1924) to The Greatest Showman (2017).

The choir’s partner for this special concert is Swings & Smiles, a local charity offering “a wide range of support for disabled children and their families in a unique and accessible environment, including respite, family play, sibling support and outreach”.

Their positive outlook is reflected in the choice of songs such as Swing Low, Sweet Chariot, Smile, Bring Me Sunshine and many others, including selections from Barnum and The Wizard of Oz.

The choir welcome back Alex Hutson, soloist at its Christmas concert, and further guest musicians.

The Cromwells will also sing some favourite songs including Bohemian Rhapsody, Ferry ‘Cross The Mersey and Fields of Gold.

The concert, conducted by Trevor Defferd, accompanied by Jevan Johnson Booth and supported by flautist Deborah Stanley, begins at 3pm.

So, “Put on a happy face, follow the yellow-brick road to St. Mary’s and come on and hear Alexander’s Ragtime Band and other music that will get your feet tapping!

“We look forward to seeing you there,” says musical director Trevor Defferd.
