Newbury memories: Remember when Corrie's Gail opened the MFI superstore in London Road?
In 1988 a new store opened in town and and the honour of cutting the ribbon fell to Coronation Street actress Helen Worth.
When she opened the MFI superstore in London Road, Newbury, the actress's character was known as Gail Tilsley. Since then she has been married four more times on the soap and changed her name from Tilsley to Platt to Hillman to Macintyre and currently Rodwell.
The Newbury Weekly News covered reported at the time that the soap star 'literally bounded into the store and screamed 'Hello Newbury''.
Miss Worth cut the ribbon in the presence of MFI manager Mr John Edwards and Mayor of Newbury Mrs Christine Fairbrother.
The national furniture retailer stayed at the sight for 20 years before the company went into administration in 2008 and the store closed.
