Andrew Lloyd Webber 'honoured' by King Charles' coronation commission




It has been announced that Sydmonton resident Andrew Lloyd Webber is to compose a new anthem for King Charles III's coronation.

The King has commissioned 12 new pieces for the ceremony at Westminster Abbey on May 6.

Lord Lloyd-Webber, who at 74 is the same age as the monarch, is writing a work based on the biblical text of Psalm 98, that begins: "O sing unto the Lord a new song; for he hath done marvellous things."

The composer and West End theatre impresario took to social media this morning to say: "I am incredibly honoured to have been asked to compose a new anthem for The Coronation. My anthem includes words adapted from Psalm 98. I have scored it for the Westminster Abbey choir and organ, the ceremonial brass and orchestra.

"I hope my anthem reflects this joyful occasion."

The King has personally selected the programme of music by world-renowned British composers. for the ceremony, a state occasion that will be attended by heads of state and royals from around the world.

Commissions also go to Master of the King’s Music Judith Weir, Sarah Class, Nigel Hess, Paul Mealor, Tarik O’Regan, Roxanna Panufnik, Shirley J Thompson, Roderick Williams, Patrick Doyle and Classic FM composer in residence Debbie Wiseman.

Works will be performed by leading classical artists of the UK and Commonwealth. The programme also includes Greek Orthodox music in memory of the King's late father, Prince Philip.
