2 artists with unique views of the countryside and natural world on show in Newbury

Two local artists currently showing at the ACE Space community venue in St Nicholas Road, Newbury, are well worth a view.

Tilehurst artist and illustrator Simon Pink is renowned for his nature-inspired contemporary paintings.

A childhood spent exploring the countryside near his home sparked a love and fascination for nature which provides the inspiration of his unique artistic vision. He has experimented with a huge variety of materials in pursuit of the style that best suits his passionate interpretation of the natural world. Simon’s imagination and attention to detail are captured in his beautiful paintings – an array of colour, pattern and texture, his curiosity in flora and fauna are intricately translated in acrylic canvases. Travelling the world from South America to Australia has broadened Simon’s source of reference material.

He paints directly onto canvas creating ideas from his thoughts and emotional response to nature. The results are a series of energising images portraying the splendour of the natural world and uniquely combining form and texture with excitement and calm. Simon’s strong artistic and design sense has led to a varied career. He has worked in interior design, product styling, fine arts and book illustration, and has written and illustrated many children’s books.

Working in acrylics, watercolours, gouache, pastels and ink, the paths, lanes, rivers and flowers in Ann Hoddinott’s paintings are reminders of the Hampshire countryside that she loves to explore.

“I like to imagine the stories they conceal from the past and consider what the future holds with climate change and the constant need for development of new homes in rural areas.

"I am currently working on a double painting commission recording a beautiful house and favourite aspects of the garden and would be happy to consider similar commissions.

"Paths and gates; trees and hills; flowers and grasses all tell us something about ourselves and life.

"Paths lead somewhere, gates may hinder our progress, trees, grasses and flowers offer hope of renewal and hills are there to climb.
