Harry and Meghan’s wedding cellist Sheku Kanneh-Mason headlines exceptional young musicians at Newbury festival
AN exciting mix of instrumentalists, vocalists and ensembles are performing at Newbury Spring Festival this year between May 10 and 24, in a celebration of the next generation of exceptional musicians.
The programme highlights some of the most promising talents making their mark on the international music scene.
Festival director Mark Eynon said: “I am very proud of the Festival’s commitment to young musicians, and over the years we have been honoured by the debuts of many rising stars.
“I am especially looking forward to welcoming back cellist Sheku Kanneh-Mason, pianist Emanuil Ivanov, and soprano Hilary Cronin, and to welcoming Johan Dalene for his debut performance of Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.”
Headlining the young artists’ performances is Sheku Kanneh-Mason, one of the world’s most celebrated young cellists, who won the 2016 BBC Young Musician award and played at the wedding of Prince Harry to Meghan Markle in 2018. He will perform with the Castalian Quartet on May 15 at the Corn Exchange, bringing his signature depth and expressive artistry to an evening of outstanding chamber music.
Saturday, May 17, sees Swedish superstar violinist Johan Dalene, in a performance of the Mendelssohn concerto with RPO under the distinguished baton of Martyn Brabbins. Johan Dalene is one of the most important young violinists to have emerged on the international stage in recent years, having won the Sibelius Competition and then nominated as a member of the prestigious BBC New Generation Artist scheme.
Also taking centre stage is Bulgarian pianist Emanuil Ivanov, who has gained international recognition since winning both the 2020 Busoni and 2023 Sheepdrove Piano Competitions. The Sheepdrove Piano Competition, a key part of the festival’s mission to support pianists early in their careers, has provided a platform for outstanding young musicians like Ivanov. He will perform at St Nics with the English Chamber Orchestra, playing Chopin’s Piano Concerto No 1, a thrilling showcase of technical brilliance and expressive depth.
The festival’s concluding concert on May 24 at St Nics will feature Beethoven’s Missa Solemnis, performed by the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra and a line-up of rising British star soloists led by soprano Hilary Cronin, who returns following her spectacular performance last year. She will perform alongside Katie Bray, Elgan Llýr Thomas and William Thomas.
Audiences will also have the chance to experience the rich, soulful sound of Brazilian guitarist Plínio Fernandes, who performs at Highclere Castle. Fernandes, praised for his exquisite interpretations and passion for Latin American repertoire, will deliver a spellbinding recital in the magnificent setting of one of the UK’s most iconic venues.
The festival also welcomes baritone James Newby, a rising vocal talent making a name for himself on the international stage. Newby will bring his expressive artistry to a stunning recital on May 20, demonstrating the emotional depth and technical mastery that have earned him widespread acclaim.
A cornerstone of the festival’s commitment to nurturing young talent is the Young Artists Recital Series, which showcases the next generation of musical excellence.
This year’s series features exceptional performances from organist Timothy Stewart, flautist Daniel Shao and the Maiastra Piano Quartet – this is a unique opportunity to witness future stars at the start of their careers.
In addition to classical performances, the festival will feature exciting young artists across other genres. The Finn Carter Quartet brings its fresh and dynamic approach to jazz, while Apollo’s Cabinet will enchant audiences with their imaginative blend of baroque music and storytelling, breathing new life into historical repertoire.
An extraordinary programme highlighting young talent alongside established stars... the Newbury Spring Festival continues to celebrate the future of classical music.
