The name is a nod to Newbury-born Paddington Bear author Michael Bond and the historic Newbury Coat of 1811.

The inn, owned by Heartwood Inns, will have a traditional pub space with a fireplace and cosy snugs, along with a spacious dining room which will have more than 160 seats.

There will also be a small outdoor courtyard.

The Coat & Bear will have 26 bespoke designed bedrooms, ranging from snugs to suites.

Management say: “This pub, surrounded by history and brimming with quirky features, will be a hub for community and hive of life.”
