Chieveley services re-opens after diesel pump fire

A34/M4 petrol station closed during early hours of today

THE PETROL forecourt at Chieveley Services was closed during the early hours of this morning (Saturday), following a fire in a diesel pump.

Two fire engines from Newbury Fire Station were called at midnight to the service station, just off the M4/A34 intersection, at junction 13 of the M4.

Firefighters discovered smoke issuing from a diesel pump on the forecourt, and on the point of igniting, according to a firefighter at the scene.

Firefighters isolated all the pumps on the forecourt, before dismantling the faulty pump, which had already been turned off by staff, who had spotted the smoke.

The cause was put down to a mechanical defect.

No-one was hurt.

The petrol station was closed during the incident and re-opened around 3am.
